Our Practice

Patient-Focused Ophthalmic Care

When you enter the doors of AVEC, you will be greeted by a warm and compassionate staff. Dr. Powell-Johnson spends an hour with her new patients and clients, as client education is a priority. During this hour, dry eye and glaucoma screening is completed.

After evaluating the patient, ocular anatomy and the clinical findings are reviewed. Screening for genetic disease is an important aspect of the initial ocular examination. Dr. Powell-Johnson reviews the medical and surgical recommendations for management of the individual case, and then entertains questions from the owner.

There is a complete ophthalmic pharmacy at AVEC which is available at the front desk. The experienced staff is there to answer any questions you have regarding your pharmacy needs, scheduling surgery, and making appointments.

Our History

Over 42 years of specialized veterinary ophthalmology in Avondale Estates, Georgia.

The AVEC Story

Founded on a Lifelong Passion for Animals

Atlanta Veterinary Eye Clinic has been a long-term dream of founder, Dr. Gail Powell-Johnson. Growing up in Miami, Florida, she had all kinds of pets, including dogs, cats, snakes, and even a pet duck. She worked for her local veterinarian, Dr. Jack Knowles, from junior high through her senior year of high school.

Working in his practice revealed the intensity of the human-animal bond. He provided a nurturing learning environment for people and their pets. Dr. Knowles served as a mentor and demonstrated the importance of a positive interactive relationship with his clients. He even attended her wedding years later.

Dr. Powell-Johnson completed her preveterinary program at Tuskegee University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. She received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine at Tuskegee University, College of Veterinary Medicine in 1978. After graduating, she entered an internship and residency program in Comparative Ophthalmology at the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine.

Following veterinary and graduate school, Dr. Powell-Johnson's mission was to create an environment for bringing animals and people together within a healing environment. She opened her veterinary ophthalmic practice in the Avondale Veterinary Hospital, in Avondale Estates, Georgia, in 1981.

In 1988, AVEC was relocated down the street to its present location, 33 Avondale Plaza North. Atlanta Veterinary Eye Clinic has been an established business within the Avondale Estates community for over 40 years. Thanks Jack and George!

Dr. Gail Powell-Johnson

Founder & Veterinary Ophthalmologist

Dr. Gail Powell-Johnson was born in Miami, Florida and has lived in the Atlanta area since 1981. She opened her referral ophthalmology practice in Avondale Estates which provides care for a variety of animals. She earned her BS in Animal Science and her DVM from Tuskegee University, College of Veterinary Medicine.

Following a one-year clinical internship at the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Powell-Johnson entered a clinical residency in Comparative Ophthalmology, completed in 1981.

She belongs to several professional organizations and has lectured across the country. Dr. Powell-Johnson has held several offices of the Greater Atlanta Veterinary Medical Society, most recently Past-President. She has been the exclusive veterinary ophthalmic consultant for Zoo Atlanta for over 32 years and served on the Board of Directors for nine years.

As both of Dr. Powell-Johnson's parents were educators, teaching comes naturally to her. She has held various faculty positions at Oglethorpe University, Clayton State, and Georgia Perimeter College.

Dr. Powell-Johnson lives in the Virginia-Highland area with her husband, Sam. Her passions outside the clinic include gardening, traveling, and scuba diving. With over 38 years of experience in clinical ophthalmology, she still feels her favorite aspect of the profession is the day-to-day interaction with her patients and their loving owners.

Grooming & Bathing

Tips to Share with Your Groomer

As a veterinary specialist, I am often asked advice regarding grooming protocol for our patients, especially post-surgically. Listed below are some suggestions for you to follow at home and to share with your groomer.

Prior to bathing, a lubricating, non-medicated ointment should be applied topically to both eyes.
Every attempt should be made to keep a blow dryer away from the pet's face and eyes.
When discussing the type of clip you want for your pet, it is especially important to keep the hair around the eyes and bridge of the nose short and away from the eyes.
If your pet is presently being maintained on a topical and/or oral medical regime, this should be followed on the day of the grooming episode.

Cleaning Around the Eyes

Removing Dust & Debris at Home

The skin around your pet's eyes is a very sensitive area. If it becomes necessary to remove dust or debris from this area, please follow these suggestions:

Begin with your pet in the sitting position before you with your hand resting on the top of their head.
With your free hand, use a gauze moistened in warm water to gently clean the areas around the eyes.
Use this time to examine your pet's eyes — they should be clear, shiny, and free of discharge or inflammation.
Praise and reward your pet!

When to Call Us: If you notice any discharge, redness, or cloudiness in the eyes, please contact your veterinarian for an examination. If you or your groomer have any questions, please do not hesitate to call our office at 404-299-0678.
